The History behind Palazzo Trulaska 5

At the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, the land was part of a large one-story Renaissance palace called U Biskupù (From the Bishops, civic number 1107). The palace had a stucco painting of the Virgin Mary on the first floor and typical Renaissance arches. Still, in the 17th century, according to the tax ledger inscription, there were two buildings, 1107a and 1107b. Their owners were Sulc Martin (Schulz, Sultys?) and the prominent tailor artist Tichy Jan (Tichej).

By the first half of the 19th century, a new two-story building with a classicist facade was built, which underwent reconstructions in 1867 and 1871. The building then housed the Plohn & spol shipping agency. (the international shipping agency still operated in 1920 and 1942), and there was also the workshop of the tinsmith Janka Jan Antonín.

He had his workshop on Dlouha Street in 1872, then from 1875 to 1881 on Celetná Street, civic number 556, where he expanded his autonomous activity with the production of ventilation systems, and then from 1881 in the current palace. Janka’s company, with the civic number 1107, is still indicated on the original ventilation covers for the de Saxe hotel at the corner of Hybernská and Nekázanka streets and in the restaurant at Masarykovo train station. In 1907, Janka founded a still-thriving factory in Radotín.

By the end of the 19th century, the building was owned by Emilián, knight Skramlik, also the owner of the connected palaces through the inner block on Revolucí Street 4 and 6. The palace was demolished around the end of 1899 (see orientation number 7), and then, together with the palaces on Revolucní Street, buildings with orientation numbers 5 and 7 were built from 1900 to 1901. The building with the orientation number 5 obtained the civic number 1109 from the original U Bilé rüze (From the White Rose – Truhlářská 5) building.

This building too was designed by the architect Materna Otakar. The building is neo-Renaissance, influenced by the Art Nouveau style, evident from the richly ornamented stucco pediment and the life-sized gilded image of Madonna with baby Jesus surrounded by angels. The building, the most monumental of all four buildings of the same owner, was named U Skramlikü (From Skramlik).

The land was connected through the inner block with the Revolucní 4/1081 building. The attic of the inner block was shared from 1896 by Skramlik Emilián’s son, the painter Skramlik Jan, and his teacher Brozik Václav. From the beginning of the century, leather merchant firms Levit Daniel, between the wars Levit Helena, Taussig Leo, and the technical goods firm Wiessler Bohumil (Palecek Leopold) all operated in the building: all were nationalized in 1948. Pecenka Antonín, from the family of the owners of the adjoining building, had a furniture warehouse here.

Between 1926 and 1927, there was a comprehensive adaptation of the building connected with the construction of the fifth floor in the rear part according to the design of Zima Alois. The building, nationalized in the 1950s, was returned after 1990 and is now owned by the company Truhlářská 5 s.r.o. The decoration of the facade and the building’s interiors emerged after the renovation and restoration works on the building’s craft elements in 2005. Then luxury apartments for commercial rent were created in the building. That’s why we’re proud to have, right next to our main entrance, the prestigious ‘Orlane Paris’ beauty salon.
